ABSTRACT Ronaldo, 2315065, THE EFFECT OF PROJECT BASED LEARNING STRATEGY IN TEACHING WRITING SKILL AT 8th GRADE STUDENTS IN MTs YATI KAMANG MUDIK. A thesis, State Islamic University of Bukittinggi, 2022 This research was due to some problems that were found in the 2nd grade of MTs Yati Kamang Mudik. First the teacher said that the main problem of the students in writing is the lack of vocabulary the students possess. The students’ vocabularies are limited, since from the past 5 years the English subject has been removed from the elementary school curriculum. Furthermore, the students do not have their own dictionaries which made them only rely on what the teacher teaches them. The next problem was the students’ background knowledge in writing. When the teacher asked them to write, the students often copy the text from google and just changed the subject’s name into their name. This study aimed to find out whether there is any significant effect of using Project Based Learning strategy towards students writing ability, to find out whether there is any significant difference of students who are taught by using Project Based Learning strategy and students who are not taught by using Project based learning on Writing ability, and to find out whether student writing ability taught by using Project Based Learning strategy is better than students who are not taught by it. This research used experimental research as the design of the research. the researcher chose the Quasi Experimental Design because in this design. The population in this research was all students of second grade at MTs Yati Kamang Mudik academic year 2021/2022 which were 22 students. There are two kinds of test used in this research, they are pre-test and post-test. The test that was used was essay test where the students are asked to make a writing passage The researcher found, there was significant effect of using Project based learning toward the students’ writing. It means there was some improvement of the students’ writing after teaching them by using Project Based Learning there was significance different between students who were taught by using Project Based Learning and the students who were not taught by it. the students who were taught by using Project Based Learning got better grade than the students who were not taught by it
