ABSTRACT Novia Maharani Siregar, 2321007, “ The Relationship Between Digital Literacy and Reading Comprehension in English at SMKN 2 Padang Panjang”. Undergraduate Thesis, English Education Study Program, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, State Islamic University of M. Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi,2026 This study investigates the relationship between digital literacy and reading comprehension in English among vocational high school students, a context in which learners are routinely exposed to digital tools yet often continue to struggle with English texts. Despite theoretical claims that digital competence supports online reading, empirical evidence for vocational student populations remains limited. This study aimed to determine whether a significant relationship exists between students' digital literacy and their reading comprehension in English. A quantitative correlational design was employed, involving 36 twelfth-grade students of the TKJ 2 program at SMKN 2 Padang Panjang, The results showed that students' digital literacy was generally high (72,2%) and homogeneous, while reading comprehension scores varied considerably. The correlation between the two variables was negligible (r = -.015, p = .929), and the null hypothesis was accepted. Keyword: Relationship, Digital Literacy, Reading Comprehension

This study was conducted because many students perceived that Non-Native English-Speaking Teachers (NNESTs) were not as competent as Native English-Speaking Teachers (NESTs), particularly in terms of pronunciation. In addition, some students experienced difficulty understanding their teachers’ explanations due to their limited vocabulary. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze students’ perceptions of the strengths and weaknesses of learning English with Non-Native English-Speaking Teachers (NNESTs) at English Academy by Ruang Guru Bukittinggi. This study employed a descriptive quantitative research design. The participants were 20 students of English Academy by Ruang Guru Bukittinggi who were selected using a total sampling technique. The data were collected through a questionnaire and analyzed using percentage calculations to determine students’ perceptions of the strengths and weaknesses of NNESTs. The findings revealed that students generally had positive perceptions toward NNESTs. The strengths indicator obtained a percentage score of 93%, which was categorized as very high. Furthermore, statements number 2 and 7 obtained the highest percentage score, reaching 100%, indicating that students highly valued NNESTs’ ability to understand learners’ difficulties and their commitment to supporting the learning process. Meanwhile, the weaknesses indicator obtained a percentage score of 75%, which was categorized as high. Statement number 1 obtained the highest percentage score among all weakness indicators, reaching 95%, indicating that this aspect was perceived as the most prominent weakness of NNESTs. However, these weaknesses did not significantly affect students’ overall perceptions because they continued to value NNESTs’ teaching competence and supportive teaching approach. Therefore, it can be concluded that the strengths of NNESTs were perceived more dominantly than their weaknesses in supporting students’ English learning.

This thesis, entitled An Analysis Of Students Commitment And Autonomy Levels In Learning English At Eleventh Grade Of Mas Ti Paninggahan by Nesi Ramadani (Student ID: 20224011) from the Graduate Program in Teaching English, Faculty of Education and Teacher Training, State Islamic University of Sjech M. Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi. Fostering commitment and autonomy at eleventh grade to support what are students going to face in the continue class is important. Since the students are indicated as the low level of commitment and autonomy , This study aimed to (1) describe students' commitment level, (2) describe students' autonomy level, (3) examine the correlation between the two, and (4) identify the factors influencing them. This s employed an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design, in which quantitative data were collected and analyzed first, followed by qualitative data collection to explain the quantitative results. The participants were 29 eleventh-grade students at MAS TI Paninggahan. Quantitative data were collected through a 28-item commitment questionnaire and a 25- item autonomy questionnaire, both using a five-point Likert scale, complemented by a classroom observation checklist. Qualitative data were then collected through a semi- structured interview with one student showing the highest indication of commitment and autonomy, analyzed using Braun and Clarke's (2006) six-phase thematic analysis, framed by Ryan and Deci's (2000) Self-Determination Theory and Benson's (2001) autonomy factor framework. The results showed that students' commitment level was Moderate (M = 3.19, SD = 0.31), as was students' autonomy level (M = 3.20, SD = 0.42), with most students (93.1% for commitment, 85.7% for autonomy) falling into the Moderate category. Pearson Correlation analysis indicated no statistically significant correlation between commitment and autonomy (r = -0.036, p = .850 > .05), suggesting the two constructs did not vary together predictably in this sample, a result read alongside the restricted range observed in both variables. The qualitative findings revealed that commitment and autonomy were shaped by internal factors, such as intrinsic motivation, identified-regulation goals, persistence, and self-efficacy, and external factors, including teacher support, peer relationships, family support, and classroom climate, with teacher scaffolding and classroom climate emerging as the most influential contextual factors. It is concluded that although eleventh-grade students at MAS TI Paninggahan show an adequate affective and behavioral foundation for learning English, this has not yet translated into strong, statistically related patterns of commitment and autonomy, nor into consistent autonomous behavior beyond the classroom. The study recommends more explicit strategy instruction from teachers, stronger institutional support beyond the classroom, and larger, more heterogeneous samples in future research. A Thesis, English Education Study Program, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, State Islamic University of Sjech M. Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi, 2026. Students' difficulties in learning English remain one of the major challenges, particularly in rural schools where educational resources and English exposure are limited. Based on preliminary observations conducted at SMPN 2 Mapattunggul, students experienced difficulties related to lack of exposure to English, limited learning resources and facilities, low learning motivation and family support, and difficulties in the learning process. Therefore, this research aimed to identify the factors contributing to students' difficulties in learning English and to identify the teacher's strategies to solve those difficulties. This research employed a descriptive quantitative design. The participants consisted of 17 students of SMPN 2 Mapattunggul who were selected using total sampling. The research instrument was a questionnaire developed based on the research indicators. The collected data were analyzed using the Guttman Scale by calculating the scores, percentages, and categories of each indicator. The findings revealed that the indicators of Students' Difficulties in Learning English and Strategies Used by Teachers to Solve Difficulties in Learning English in Rural Areas were categorized as Very High. The results indicated that students' difficulties were mainly influenced by lack of exposure to English, limited learning resources and facilities, low learning motivation and family support, and difficulties in the learning process. The findings also showed that the teacher solved these difficulties by utilizing innovative teaching methods, continuously providing motivation and encouragement, improving professional competence, and promoting communication and collaboration with parents. These findings indicate that both the factors influencing students' difficulties and the teacher's strategies were consistent with the theoretical framework used in this research.

This research was conducted because the teacher had not carried out a needs analysis before designing speaking materials. As a result, students found the current materials difficult and not related to their major. They expected speaking materials that matched the Fashion Design context to make learning more relevant and useful. This study used a quantitative survey method. The respondents for this research were 67 students of 11th grade Fashion Design Department. The data were collected through a multiple-choice questionnaire consisting of Target Needs and Learning Needs items, then analyzed descriptively. The findings showed that students mostly needed speaking materials for future work, especially in fashion-related situations such as job interviews and presentations. They still lacked vocabulary and confidence in communication. In terms of learning needs, students preferred inputs that used authentic and visual materials such as videos or pictures, with topics and language adjusted to their level. It can be concluded that students of the Fashion Design program need speaking materials that are practical, visually supported, and relevant to their vocational field. Conducting needs analysis helps teachers design more effective and meaningful speaking lessons.

ABSTRACT Mutia Anggina Sari Pakpahan, 2321011, An Analysis of Teacher Code-switching Practice In English Classroom at SMPN 1 Padang Panjang, A Thesis, English Education Study Program, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, State Islamic University of Sjech M. Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi, 2025. This research aimed to investigate how code-switching was implemented by the English teacher and to analyze why it did not significantly contribute to improving students’ English proficiency at SMPN 1 Padang Panjang. The study was conducted due to the frequent use of code-switching in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms, where teachers alternate between English and students’ first language to make lessons more comprehensible. Although this practice supports understanding, its impact on students’ long-term language development remains debatable. This research employed a qualitative case study design focusing on one English teacher and her students. The data were collected through observations checkhlist and semi-structured interviews. The collected data were analyzed descriptively and interpretatively to identify the implementation and functions of code-switching and to explore their influence on students’ comprehension and English proficiency. The findings revealed that the teacher implemented code-switching flexibly and purposefully using tag-switching, intra-sentential, and inter-sentential forms. These switches served several pedagogical functions such as clarification, reiteration, classroom management, affective support, and checking understanding. While these functions effectively improved students’ comprehension and classroom interaction, they did not enhance English proficiency due to reduced exposure to English input and dependency on the first language. In conclusion, code-switching was an effective instructional aid for supporting comprehension and engagement but less effective for promoting language proficiency when used excessively. ABSTRACT This study investigates the effect of using ice breaking activities on students’ motivation in learning English at SMPN 6 Bukittinggi. The research was motivated by the observation that many students in junior high school exhibit low motivation in English classes, often due to anxiety, boredom, or fear of peer judgment. The study aimed to explore whether ice breaking, as an interactive and engaging teaching strategy, could improve student motivation in accordance with the goals of the Merdeka Curriculum. A quasi-experimental method was applied, involving two classes: one experimental group that received treatment using ice breaking activities (such as A Round Word, Draw a Word, and Crossword), and one control group that followed conventional instruction without such activities. Both groups were given pre-tests and post-tests using a motivation questionnaire with a Likert scale. The findings revealed a significant improvement in the motivation scores of the experimental group compared to the control group. The paired sample t-test showed a significance value of 0.000, while the independent sample t-test yielded a significance value of 0.031, indicating that ice breaking had a statistically significant effect on student motivation. In conclusion, ice breaking activities effectively enhance students’ motivation in English learning by creating a more relaxed, interactive, and supportive classroom atmosphere. The study recommends that English teachers incorporate such activities regularly to foster student engagement and improve learning outcomes.
