Abstrak
ABSTRACT Nikmah Khairani, 2316077. “The Effect of Using Context Clues Strategy on Reading Comprehension at The First Grade Students of SMK Harpan Bangsa Panti”. A thesis, State Islamic Institute (IAIN) Bukittinggi, 2021. This research was due to discover the effect of using context clues strategy on students’ reading comprehension. It has been done at SMK Harapan Bangsa Panti because most of students still encounter problems in mastering English especially in reading comprehension. Most of student lack of vocabulary and students had low motivation in reading English text, students assumed that English is difficult thing. When students studied in classroom they were sleepy, bored, and talking with friends. As a result, only some of the students got involved in the classroom activity. This research used experimental research. The researcher used a quasi- experimental design by using the pre-test and post-test. The population of this research was first grade students of SMK Harapan Bangsa Panti. The sample was X.OTKP which was treated as experimental class taught by using context clues strategy and X.BDP was treated as control class taught without using context clues strategy. To determine the sample, the researcher used purposive sampling technique. To analyze the data of experimental class and control class, the researcher used the normality by using Liliefors test and the homogeneity test by using F-test result and to test the hypothesis the researcher used t-test formula and consulted the result into ttable with the level of significant (∝) =0,05. The findings show that three hypothesis (Ha) were accepted. The first, the result of the pre-test and the post-test scores of experimental class was found that the tobtained (10,31) more than ttable (1,960). So, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted that there was a significant effect of using context clues strategy on students’ reading comprehension. The second, the result of the post-test scores of experimental and control class were found that the tobtained (4,21) more than the ttable (1,960). Thus, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted that there was a significant difference between the students who taught by using context clues strategy and who taught without using context clues strategy. The last, the result of the post-test of experimental class and control class were found that tobtained (4,21) more than ttable (1,960). It was also found that the students’ reading comprehension by using context clues strategy was better than the students who taught without using context clues strategy. It means that by using context clues strategy in teaching English gives significant effect on students’ reading comprehension. It is proved that using context clues strategy on reading comprehension can help the students in reading comprehension. Keywords: Reading Comprehension, Context Clues, Strategy. Skripsi, Institut Agama Islam Negeri (IAIN) Bukittinggi. 2021. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh penggunaan strategi context clues pada pemahaman membaca siswa. Penelitian ini telah dilakukan di SMK Harapan Bangsa Panti karena masih banyak siswa yang menghadapi masalah-masalah dalam menguasai pelajaran bahasa Inggris khususnya dalam pemahaman membaca. Kebanyakan dari siswa kekurangan kosa kata dan motivasi siswa yang rendah untuk membaca teks bahasa Inggris, siswa menganggap bahwa bahasa Inggris adalah hal yang sulit. Ketika siswa belajar di kelas, mereka mengantuk, bosan, dan mengobrol dengan teman. Akibatnya, hanya sebagian siswa yang terlibat dalam kegiatan pembelajaran di kelas. Jenis penelitian yang digunakan adalah penelitian eksperimen. Peneliti menggunakan penelitian quasi eksperimen dengan menggunakan model pre-test and post-test. Populasi dari penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas satu SMK Harapan Bangsa Panti. Sampelnya adalah X.OTKP diperlakukan sebagai kelas eksperiment yang di ajar dengan menggunakan strategy context clues dan X.BDP diperlakukan sebagai kelas kontrol yang di ajar dengan tidak menggunakan strategi context clues. Untuk menentukan sampel, peneliti menggunakan tekhnik purposive sampling. Untuk menganalisis data kelas eksperimen dan kelas kontrol, peneliti menggunakan normalitas dengan menggunakan uji liliefors dan homogenitas dengan menggunakan uji F dan untuk menguji hipotesis peneliti menggunakan uji t dan dikonsultasikan ke dalam table t dengan level signifikan (∝) =0,05. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa ketiga hipotesis (Ha) diterima. Pertama, hasil pre-test dan post-test dari kelas eksperimen ditemukan bahwa t-hitung (10,31) lebih besar dari t-table (1,960). Jadi, hipotesis alternatif (Ha) diterima yang artinya ada dampak dari pengaruh penggunaan strategi context clues pada pemahaman membaca siswa. Kedua, hasil nilai post-test dari kelas eksperimen dan kelas control ditemukan bahwa t-hitung (4,21) lebih besar dari t-tabel (1,960). Maka, hipotesis alternative (Ha) diterima yang mana terdapat perbedaan yang signifikan diantara siswa yang diajar menggunakan strategi context clues dan yang tidak menggunakan strategi context clues. Terakhir, hasil nilai post-test dari kelas eksperimen dan kelas kontrol ditemukan bahwa t-hitung (4,21) lebih besar dari t-tabel (1,960). Juga ditemukan bahwa pemahaman membaca siswa yang menggunakan strategi context clues lebih baik daripada siswa yang tidak menggunakan strategi context clues. Itu berarti dengan menggunakan strategi context clues dalam pembelajaran bahasa inggris memberikan pengaruh yang signifikan terhadap pemahaman membaca siswa. Terbukti bahwa penggunaan strategi context clues pada pemahaman membaca dapat membantu siswa dalam pemahaman membaca. Kata Kunci : Pemahaman Membaca, Context Clues, Strategi
