Abstrak
There are several problems that researchers found in the field in the process of learning English which became the background of this research. The purpose of this research was to determine whether there was a significant effect and significant difference in reading comprehension by applying the PQ4R strategy in learning English recount text material in class X MAN 4 Tanah Datar. The next purpose was to find whether the PQ4R strategy was better than the conventional strategy to use. The type of research used was quantitative using experimental methods and using quasi-experimental design. The population in this research were grade X students of MAN 4 Tanah Datar. Reading test was conducted as a technique to collect data, t test was used to analyze the data in this research. Based on the results of the data analysis, there was a significant effect in the learning outcomes of students who used the PQ4R strategy. This is evidenced based on the mean of the experimental class on the pretest and posttest that has been done. Furthermore, based on the results of the data analysis, there is a significant difference between the used of the PQ4R strategy and the conventional strategy. Based on the student learning outcomes (posttest) of the control class and experimental class, it can be seen that the mean of the control class was 69.55 and the experimental class was 75.60. Based on these results it can be concluded that the used of the PQ4R strategy was better than the used of conventional strategy in class X MAN 4 Tanah Datar students.
