Abstrak
ABSTRACT Ayu Andira, 2313.114.The Effect of Using Herringbone Technique towards Students’ Reading Comprehension at Eighth Grade of SMPN 4 Lubuk Basung2018/2019 Academic Year. A Thesis, Islamic Institute Collage ( IAIN) Bukittinggi, 2019. This research was due to discover the effect of using Herringbone techniquetowards students’ reading comprehension. It has been done at SMPN 4 Lubuk Basung because most of the students of Junior High School still encounter problems in mastering English especialy reading comprehension. Most of the students were got marks in reading below KKM, in the mid term test among 27 students in the class, there were 17 students got mark below KKM. It means that about 63% of them were confused and difficulties in reading comprehension. In theory, we found that there were many technique that could be used by the teacher to help their students to improve students reading comprehension . One of them is Herringbone technique. This research used experimentalresearch.Theresearcherused a quasi-experimental design by using the pretest-posttest control group design.The population of this research was the eighth grade students at SMPN 4 Lubuk Basung. The sample was VIII 1was treated as experimental class and taught by using Herringbone technique and VIII 2was treated as control class and taught by using conventional technique.To determine the sample, the researcher used purposive sampling technique.The data was got through pretest and posttest to experimental and control groups.To analyze the data,the researcher used the normality by using Lilliefors test and the homogeneity test by usingBarlett test and to test the Hypothesis the researcher used t-test formula and consulted the result into t- table with level of significance α = 1,67. From the result and accounting the pre-test and post-test scores of the experiment class, it was found that the t-obtained (7,95) was higher than the t-table (1,67) with degree of freedom (df) = 53 and (α) = 0,05 was 1,67. So, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted which means that there was significant effect of using Herringbone technique to the students reading comprehension. Then, the calculation of post-test both classes : was experimental class and control class, it was obtained that the t-o was (2,42) which was higher than the t-table (1,67). with degree of freedom 28 + 27 – 2 = 53 and (α)= 0,05 was 1,67. So, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted which means that there is significant difference between taught by using Herringbone technique and taught by using conventional technique. Then t-obtained both of classes is (2,42) which was higher than t-table (1,67) with (α)= 0,05 was 1,67. So, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted which means that Herringbone technique is better than conventional technique in teaching reading comprehension . So, it can be concluded that the entire hypothesis is accepted. It is proved that using Herringbone technique as a reading method can help the students in improving their reading comprehension.
