ABSTRACT ERNITA. 2313.121. The Effect of Problem Based Learning Strategy toward Students’ Speaking Ability at the Eighth Grade of MTsN Penampung in Academic Year 2017/2018. Thesis. IAIN Bukittinggi. This research was done to several problems found in the field conducted to know the effect of problem based learning strategy toward students’ speaking ability. It was conducted at the eighth grade of MTsN Penampung in Academic Year 2017/2018. The aim of this research was to know whether there was any significant effect of using problem based learning strategy toward students’ speaking ability, whether there was any significant difference between the students who were taught by using problem based learning strategy and students who were taught without problem based learning strategy and wheteher theproblem based learning better than conventional strategy toward students’ speaking ability. This research was experimental research with a quasi-experimental by using the pretest-posttest control group design. The population of this research was the eighth grade of MTsN Penampung. The sample chosen was VIII.2 as experimental class and taught by using problem based learning strategy and VIII.4 as control class and taught by using conventional strategy. To determine the sample, the researcher used purposive sampling technique. The data were got through pretest and posttest to experimental and control groups. To analyze the data, the researcher used the normality test by using Lilliefors formula and the homogeneity test by using F test formula and the Hypothesis test used t-test formula and consulted the result into t- table with level of significance α = 0,05. From the result and accounting the pre-test and post-test scores of the experiment class, it was found that there was a significant effect of using problem based learning strategy toward students’ speaking ability. It was proven by the value t-calculated of experimental class in pre test and post test was higher than t-table ( 2,97 > 2,00). Then, there was any significant difference between the students who were taught by using problem based learning strategy and students who were taught without problem based learning strategy. It was proven by the value t-calculated in post test from experimental class and control class was higher than t-table ( 2,65 > 2,00). After that, the problem based learning was better than conventional strategy toward students’ speaking ability. It was proven by the mean score of experimental class was higher than control class in post test (82,85 > 76,75).
