ABSTRACT Suci Shintani, 2313.029. The Effect of Using Role Play with Local Culture Theme Toward Students’ Speaking Skill at Eight Grade SMPN 7 Bukittinggi. A Thesis, State Islamic Institute ( IAIN) Bukittinggi, 2018. This research was due to discover the effect of using role play with locla culture theme toward students’ speaking skill. It has been done at SMPN 7 Bukittinggi because most of the students of Junior High School still encounter problems in mastering English especially speaking skill. Most of them have low mativation in studying English specially speaking because the activity was not interesting, they also have low capability in mastering grammar, vocabulary and pronounciation. As the result, many of them have low speaking skill. This research used experimental research. The researcher used a quasi-experimental design by using the pretest-posttest control group design. The population of this research was the eigth grade students at SMPN 7 Bukittinggi. The sample was VIII 3 was treated as experimental class and taught by using role play with local culture theme and VIII 4 was treated as control class and taught by using conventional method. To determine the sample, the researcher used purposive sampling technique. The data was got through pretest and posttest to experimental and control groups. To analyze the data, the researcher used the normality by using Lilliefors test and the homogeneity test by using F test and to test the Hypothesis the researcher used t-test formula and consulted the result into t- table with level of significance α = 0,05. From the result and accounting the pre-test and post-test scores of the experiment class, it was found that the t-obtained (7,8) was higher than the t-table (1.676) with degree of freedom (df) = 51 and (α) = 0,05. So, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted which means that there was significant effect of role play with locla culture theme toward students’ speaking skill. Then, the calculation of post-test both classes : was experimental class and control class, it was obtained that the t-o was (2,24) which was higher than the t-table (2.009). With degree of freedom 26 + 26 – 1 = 51 and (α)= 0.025 So, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted which means that there is significant difference between using role play with local culture theme and common strategy. Then t-obtained both of classes in third hypothesis is (2.24) which was higher than t-table (1.676) with (α)= 0,05. So, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted which means that role play with local culture theme is better than common strategy in teaching speaking skill. So, it can be concluded that the entire hypothesis is accepted. It is proved that using role play with local culture theme as a speaking strategy can help the students in improving their speaking skill.
