Abstrak
This study was motivated by the emergence of a phenomenon of resistance to the mangaku induak tradition as it has evolved; this tradition was previously a customary requirement prior to marriage for male outsiders intending to marry women in the village of Lubuak Gadang Tenggara. The research questions in this study are: How is the mangaku induak tradition practiced in weddings in the village of Lubuak Gadang Tenggara? How does the phenomenon of rejection of the mangaku induak tradition manifest among migrant communities? And how are the practice and rejection of the mangaku induak tradition viewed from the perspective of Islamic Legal Sociology? This study is a field research project employing a qualitative approach. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation, and were then analyzed using data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion-drawing techniques. The research findings indicate that the mangaku induak tradition is still practiced as a social-customary requirement for outsiders who intend to marry local women. This tradition serves to provide social identity, expand kinship networks, and strengthen social integration within the community. The phenomenon of rejection arises due to economic factors, limited understanding of customs, and a shift in the community’s mindset toward prioritizing efficiency in the marriage process. From the perspective of Islamic Legal Sociology, the mangaku induak tradition is a living law that aligns with the principle of al-'adah muhakkamah and serves the public good. This study found that the continuity of this tradition is influenced by the community’s habitus as well as the possession of social, cultural, symbolic, and economic capital operating within the customary sphere of the Nagari Lubuak Gadang Tenggara community.
