Abstrak
Dani Ramanda (2321018) “The Use of AI Toward Students’ Writing on the Sixth Semester Students of English Study Program State Islamic University of Sjech M. Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi” The development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has brought significant changes in the field of education, particularly in students' writing practices. Tools such as ChatGPT, Grammarly, and QuillBot are increasingly used by students to support academic writing, which raises concerns about independent thinking and academic integrity. This study aims to analyze how sixth-semester students use AI in different stages of the writing process and to evaluate the benefits and drawbacks of AI in enhancing academic writing skills. This research employed a mixed-methods approach with a convergent parallel design, allowing for simultaneous yet independent collection of both quantitative and qualitative data. Quantitative data were gathered through a questionnaire administered to 88 sixth-semester students of the English Education Study Program at UIN Sjech M. Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi who had experience using AI in their writing. The questionnaire was validated through content validation and reliability testing using Pearson correlation analysis. Qualitative data were collected via in-depth interviews with 10 purposively selected students based on their active engagement with AI tools. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, while qualitative data were processed using thematic analysis to identify patterns and insights. The results show that students use AI extensively during the pre-writing, drafting, and revising stages. AI is perceived as helpful for improving grammar, structuring sentences, and expanding vocabulary. However, the study also found that some students directly copied AI-generated content without paraphrasing or applying critical reflection, indicating a potential ethical risk. This highlights a gap between students‘ perceived benefits of AI and the academic expectations of independent thought and integrity. Therefore, the use of AI in academic writing should be accompanied by strong digital literacy, ethical awareness, and academic guidance to ensure it serves as a supportive tool rather than a substitute for student thinking.
