Abstrak
ABTRACT Lusyani Mardiyanti Nur, 2321016, The Correlation Between Students' Language Exposure and Their Writing Ability at the Eight Grade Students of SMPN 1 V Koto Timur, A Thesis, State Islamic University of Sjech M Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi, 2025. This research conducted several problem related to correlation between students’ language exposure and their writing ability. first, some students struggled to express their ideas effectively due to limited writing skills. Second, some students used different writing styles that were maybe influenced by their language exposure. Third, most students were not familiar with the structure in writing, which hindered their ability to write effectively. Therefore, this research aimed to determined whether there is a correlation between students' language exposure and their writing ability at the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 V Koto Timur. This research used a correlational design to examine the relationship between students’ language exposure and writing ability. The population was all eighth-grade students at SMPN 1 V Koto Timur (classes VIII.A, VIII.B, and VIII.C), totaling 80 students. Using total sampling, all students were included as the sample. Data were collected through a questionnaire and a writing test. The questionnaire, adapted from Magno (2009) and Amira et al. (2021), consisted of 23 items to measure language exposure. Data were analyzed using SPSS 20 with the Pearson Product Moment correlation technique. The findings of this research revealed a significant correlation between students’ language exposure and their writing ability, with a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.755. Based on the interpretation scale, a correlation value ranging from 0.70 to 0.899 is categorized as strong. This indicates that there is a strong and positive relationship between the level of students’ language exposure and their writing ability. In other words, the higher the students’ exposure to the English language, the better their writing ability tends to be.
