Abstrak
This research was conducted because there were several problems related to students' motivation in learning English in the classroom. Based on the preliminary research that has been done there are several problems found that students feel embarrassed when speaking in front of the class using English. Coupled with the students' lack of vocabulary, it makes it difficult for them to speak using English. Some students are not motivated to communicate using English in the classroom. Most students are silent when learning and speaking English in class, and some students do not participate in class discussions because their lack of vocabulary makes them not confident to speak English. Thus, this study aims to find out the factors that cause students to have low motivation in learning English. This research was conducted at SMAN 1 Banuhampu. The design of research are narrative inquiry. The infprmant of this research were an English Teachers and the students who had low motivation in learning English. To collect the data, this study used observation, interview to the English teacher and the students who have low motivation in first-grade as informants. This study used purposive sampling to obtain the sample. Then, the researcher used purposive sampling to get the interview sample. There was one English teacher interviewed in this study. The are some factors the students had low motivation in learning English,they wereLack of enthusiasm and passive behavior in learning English, lack of confidence creates a detrimental cycle of low motivation and engagement, making it difficult for students to fully participate and benefit from the lesson. Finally, students' lack of engagement reduces their sense of responsibility and ownership of their learning. Students often wait for answers from peers rather than attempting tasks independently.
