Abstrak
This study was conducted because of several problem that the students had. The problem in 10th grade students of MAN Lima Puluh Kota, is students average in speaking test are good, but students average in grammar test are low. Second, some of the students can’t choose the correct vocabulary in exercise and didn’t pay attention while teachers give the lesson in the classroom. Last, some students not interst in learning English. Because of that, the researcher wanted to find out the correlation between grammar ability and students speaking skill at 10th grade students of MAN Lima Puluh Kota. The design of this research was correlational research. Population of this research was all of the 10th grade students of MAN Lima Puluh Kota in academic year 2022/2023, which consist of 4 classes., with 75 students. Sample of this research was using total sampling because the population are less than 100 students. The instrument of this research was grammar test and speaking test. The research was carried out in October 2023. To find out that grammar ability and students speaking skill corralate or not, the researcher used Pearson Correlation. The result of the research show that there is low correlation between grammar ability and students speaking skill at 10th grade students of MAN Lima Puluh Kota academic year 2022/2023. The researcher found that the coefficient of correlation between grammar ability and sstudents speaking skill at 10th grade students of MAN Lima Puluh Kota was 0,23. There was low correlation and its mean Ho was accepted. Then, there is a low correlation between grammar ability and students speaking skill. Based on the result of the research, it can be concluded that grammar ability has a low contribution in students speaking skill. It means that if the students have a good result in speaking test didn’t mean they will have a good result in grammar test, and so is the opposite. In conclusion, this research is done for finding the correlation between grammar ability and students speaking skill at 10th grade students of MAN Lima Puluh Kota.
