Abstrak
The background of this research was there were some problems regarding students' English achievement and their high-order thinking skills. The theories said that high-order thinking skills can be a tool that helps improve students’ learning achievement. The researcher found the difference between theory and facts in the field. The teacher already applied HOTS in the learning process, but students’ score in English still low. There were many students who didn’t pass the minimum completeness criteria of English subject. Because of that, the researcher interested to know the correlation between students’ high-order thinking skills (HOTS) and their learning achievement. This research was done at seventh grade of SMPN 3 Koto Besar. The design of this research was correlational research. The researcher used test and documentation as instrument. The researcher used test for collect students’ score of HOTS, meanwhile the documentation was used for collect students’ English score in report card. The population of this research was all the sevent grade students, which consist two clasess. The sample of this research was VII A class, there were 24 students in this class. The sampling of this research was cluster sampling. The research was carried out in September-October 2023. The researcher used Bivariate Pearson Correlation to find out the correlation between students’ high order thinking skills (HOTS) and their English achievement. The result of this research showed that there was a correlation between students’ high order thinking skills (HOTS) and their English achievement at seventh grade of SMPN 3 Koto Besar. The researcher found that coefficient correlation between students’ high order thinking skills (HOTS) and their English achievement at seventh grade of SMPN 3 Koto Besar was 0,601. There was a positive correlation between the variables. Then, the correlation magnitude was Sufficient, it’s around 0,40-0,60. For the hypothesis, Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected. Thus, there was a positive correlation between students’ high order thinking skills (HOTS) and their English achievement at seventh grade of SMPN 3 Koto Besar. It means, if students’ score in HOTS are low, then their English achievement are also low. Meanwhile, if students’ score in HOTS are high, then their English achievement are also high.
