Abstrak
This research examines the direction of anxiety characterized by feelings of worry or nervousness on the achievement of 7th-grade students learning English at SMP N 6 Padang. Anxiety can make it harder for students to focus, feel good about learning, and do well in class, especially in language subjects. Previous studies suggest that students who feel more anxious might struggle more in school, including in learning English. The goal of this research is to see how anxious these students feel about learning English, to check their grades in English, and to find out if there’s a connection between their anxiety levels and their performance in English. By understanding this relationship, the study hopes to help teachers create a more comfortable classroom environment, helping students feel less anxious and do better in English. This research used a quantitative approach to explore the link between anxiety and learning success in a group of 61 students chosen randomly. Anxiety was measured using a tool called the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale (FLCAS), and students’ midterm scores represented their English achievement. Experts checked the questionnaire for accuracy, and statistical tests confirmed the results’ reliability. The findings show a moderate, significant connection between students’ anxiety and their English grades, with higher anxiety linked to lower grades. Results from 61 students show that as anxiety rises, grades tend to drop. This research highlights that anxiety impacts students' learning success, suggesting that creating a supportive classroom can help students feel more confident and achieve better results.
