ABSTRACT Kharisma Afri, 2313.014. “An Analysis of Students' Ability in Pronouncing Word Stresses of English Education Section IAIN Bukittinggi Academic Year 2019/2020”. Skripsi Institut Agama Islam Negri (IAIN) Bukittinggi 2020. This research was conducted because Second Semester English students at IAIN Bukittinggi were still not aware of the word stress. The problem in this study is, do not use the word stress well and speak based on mother tongue. More students pay attention to the grammar of pronunciation on. The main focus of this study is to determine the level of student ability by using percentages. This type of research used in this research is descriptive quantitative research. Researchers try to analyze and distribute the ability of students to overcome difficulties in a word (word stress). The tool used is a test. Tests have been conducted on English students at IAIN Bukittinggi with 20 samples. The population of this research is the second semester of English department at IAIN Bukittinggi. Samples were taken using a random technique. The data must be analyzed by two university lecturers to prove its validity which consists of 30 words and 5 conditions. To analyze the data researchers use, then describe the data and find levels. From the description of the data, analyze the description of the students' abilities. In the first condition, under pressure on the first syllable 56% of students actually pronounced stress words and 44% of students mispronounced items of stress instrument words. And the level of student ability is fair. The second condition, in the pressure on the last syllable there are 48% of students who actually pronounce stress words and 52% of students who mispronounce items from the words of stress instruments. And the level of student ability is bad. The third condition, in the pressure on the penultimate syllable, there are 39% of students who actually pronounce stress words and 61% of students who mispronounce items from the words of stress instruments. And the level of student ability is bad. Keywords: pressure level, stress level in the second syllable, there are 38% of students actually reciting, stress words and 62% students mispronounce items of words, instruments, stress, and abilities, level of student ability the bad one. And the last word and pronouns of compound words. There are 34% of students who actually pronounce stress words and 66% of students mispronounce items from stress instrument words. So, the results of research that prove the ability of students in word difficulties in the second semester English Department at IAIN Bukittinggi are at a poor level. The results, in this study were found from the ability of students in word stress difficulties based on pronunciation tests.
