Yenni. 2314.117. The Effect of Using Progressive Inquiry Toward Students’ Writing Skill At The Second Grade of MTs Al-Ma’arif Bukittinggi. Thesis. IAIN Bukittinggi. This research was due to discover the effect of using progressive inquiry toward students’ writing skill. It has been done at Junior High School Al-Ma’arif Bukittinggi because most of the students of Junior High School still encounter problems in mastering English especialy writing skill. Most of the students were passive in the classroom; it could be seen from their ability in writing activity such as; they did not master grammar, then difficult to develop their ideas into a good paragraph. Next, they had limited vocabulary so, they were reluctant in writing. The researcher used a quasi-experimental design by using the pretest-posttest control group design. The population of this research was the second grade students at Junior High School Al-Ma’arif. The sample was VIII A was treated as experimental class and taught by using progressive inquiry and VIII B was treated as control class and taught by using conventional method. To determine the sample, the researcher used total sampling technique. The data was gotten through pretest and posttest to experimental and control groups. To analyze the data, the researcher used the normality and homogeneity by using SPSS software and to test the Hypothesis the researcher used t-test formula and consulted the result into t- table with level of significance α = 0,05. From the result and calculating the pre-test and post-test scores of the experiment class, it was found that the t-obtained (2.91) was higher than the t-table (1.688) with degree of freedom (df) = 36 and (α) = 0,05. So, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted which means that there was significant effect of progressive inquiry toward students’ writing skill. Then, the calculation of post-test both classes, experimental class and control class, it was obtained that the t-obtained was (1.802) which was less than the t-table (2.028). with degree of freedom (df) = 36 and (α)= 0,025 So, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was rejected which means that there is no significant difference between using Progressive inquiry and conventional method. Then t-obtained both of classes is (1.85) which was less than t-table (2.028) with (α)= 0,025. So, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was rejected which means that progressive inquiry is not better than conventional method in teaching writing skill. So, it can be concluded that the null hypothesis was accepted . It was proved that progressive inquiry can’t help the students in improving their writing skill at Junior High School Al-Ma’arif Bukittinggi.
