ABSTRACT Abdul Aziz, 2321043, “The Effect of Using Memrise Application in Learning English Vocabulary at The Eighth Grade of SMPN 4 Bukittinggi” a thesis, English Education Department, UIN Sjech M. Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi, 2026. This study is motivated by the importance of vocabulary mastery in learning English as well as the difficulties junior high school students’ face, such as a lack of vocabulary, poor motivation to learn, and a lack of variety in teaching methods. These problems demonstrate the need for cutting-edge educational materials that can improve students' efficacy and engagement when learning new words. The Memrise app is an alternate option that combines gamification, multimedia features, and spaced repetition to enhance vocabulary acquisition. This study employs a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental research design to investigate whether the use of the Memrise application has a significant impact on eighth-grade students' acquisition of English vocabulary at SMPN 4 Bukittinggi. The population consisted of all eighth-grade students at SMPN 4 Bukittinggi, from which two classes were chosen as samples: an experimental group that received instruction using the Memrise application and a control group that was taught using traditional teaching methods. The data were collected using vocabulary pre-tests and post-tests, and SPSS was used to analyze both descriptive and inferential findings. According to the results, students who were taught using the Memrise app outperformed those who were taught using conventional techniques in terms of vocabulary. The experimental and control groups differ significantly, according to the statistical findings. Thus, it can be said that the Memrise app significantly improves pupils' acquisition of English vocabulary. According to this study, Memrise is a useful learning tool that can improve students' vocabulary knowledge and boost their enthusiasm for studying English.
