A thesis, English Education Department, Islamic State University of Sjech M Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi, 2026. This research was conducted in response to the condition in which a non-English teacher was required to teach English at MTsT Simanau despite having a different educational background, which could potentially affect pedagogical competence and teaching effectiveness. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze how non-English teachers met pedagogical competence in teaching English and to identify specific problems. A descriptive qualitative research design was used. A non-English teacher was the research participant. Data were collected through classroom observations and semi-structured interviews. Then, the methods of condensation, presentation, and conclusion drawing were used to analyse the data. Results show that the teacher demonstrated basic pedagogical skills in managing the class, delivering materials, and assessing students. However, the learning process is usually teacher-centred and relies heavily on worksheets and translations. In addition, the teacher faced a number of problems. These include a lack of English content knowledge, pronunciation and speaking difficulties, deficient macro language skills, and limitations in media and technology integration. In conclusion, the non-English teacher have shown efforts to fulfil pedagogical requirements in English language teaching, but their teaching competencies and teaching practices still need to be improved. Professional development programmes and pedagogical training are needed to improve teaching quality and improve students' English learning outcomes in this context.
