Leni Afrizola, 2321031. Google Translate and Paper Dictionary on Students’ Vocabulary at SMK N 2 Bukittinggi: A Comparative Study. Vocabulary mastery plays an important role in learning English, especially for vocational high school students who need language skills for academic and professional purposes. This study was motivated by the increasing use of Google Translate and paper dictionaries, although few studies have empirically compared their effectiveness. The aim of this research is to find out whether there is a significant difference in vocabulary mastery between students who use Google Translate and those who use a paper dictionary at SMK N 2 Bukittinggi. This study employed a quantitative approach with a comparative research design. The population consisted of all tenth-grade students at SMK N 2 Bukittinggi. A sample of 90 students was selected using stratified random sampling, divided into two groups: the Google Translate group and the paper dictionary group the sample was 45 students for each group. Data were collected through a multiplechoice vocabulary test. Data were analyzed using SPSS 20, specifically through the independent sample t-test to examine differences between the two groups. The results showed that the mean score of the paper dictionary group was 73.20, while the Google Translate group had a mean score of 71.00. The result of the independent sample t-test indicated a t-value of 0.802 and a significance level (Sig. 2-tailed) of 0.428. Since the p-value was greater than 0.05, the null hypothesis (H₀) was accepted, indicating that there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups. Although the paper dictionary group performed slightly better, the difference was not meaningful in statistical terms. Therefore, both tools can be considered equally effective in supporting students’ vocabulary acquisition.
