Abstrak
Hanum Salsabila A, 2321095 “The Effect of Using Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy (VSS) through YouTube Short Clips towards Students’ Vocabulary Mastery at Seventh Grade Students at SMPN 8 Bukittinggi.” A Thesis, English Education Study Program, Islamic State University of Sjech M. Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi, 2025. Vocabulary Self-Collection Strategy (VSS) is an active learning strategy that allows students to collect and discuss vocabulary they find interesting or important. In SMPN 8 Bukittinggi, many students in seventh grade still struggle with vocabulary mastery due to limited learning strategies, less interactive teaching, and lack of student engagement. This study aimed to find out the effect of using VSS through YouTube short clips on students’ vocabulary mastery. This research was a quantitative study using a true experimental design, specifically a pre-test and post-test non-equivalent control group design. The population of this research was the seventh grade students of SMPN 8 Bukittinggi. The sample was selected using cluster random sampling technique: class VII.2 was the control class taught without VSS and class VII.4 was the experimental class taught using VSS through YouTube short clips. The data were collected using vocabulary tests in pre-test and post-test. Based on the results, first, there was a significant effect of using VSS through YouTube short clips on students’ vocabulary mastery. This was proven by the improvement of the mean score in the experimental class (58.27 > 42.80). Second, there was a significant difference between the experimental and control classes, as shown by the result of independent sample t-test where sig. (2-tailed) = 0.000 0.05. Third, teaching vocabulary through VSS and YouTube clips was more effective than traditional teaching methods.
