A Thesis, English Education Department, Islamic State University of Sjech M. Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi, 2025. Balloon debates are one of the popular types of debates that can be used as an alternative to teaching students' speaking ability. Students' English skills at SMAN 2 Bukittinggi face problems in terms of speaking score that do not reach the Criteria score, teaching techniques for speaking students are still less interactive, students are afraid to come forward and speak. This study aims to determine the effect of using balloon debate on students' speaking ability. This research was quantitative research and the researcher used true experimental design with the the pretest-posttest non-equivalent control design. The population of this research was the 11th grade students of SMAN 2 Bukittinggi. The researcher used cluster random sampling as the technique of sampling and the sample was the student XI F10 as the control class and taught without balloon debate technique and XI F11 as the experimental class taught with balloon debate technique.The data was obtained from oral speaking test. From the results of the pre-test and post test of the experimental and control classes, the researcher got the answers of the hypothesis. First, there was significant effect of using balloon debate technique towards students’ speaking ability proven based on the mean score posttest is better than pre-test in experiment class (69.88 > 59.18). Second, there was significant difference the experiment class and control class.It was proven from the independent sample T-test that have the sig (2- tailed) was 0.000 0.05. Third, teaching and learning by using balloon debate technique was better than teaching without using balloon denate technique towards students speaking ability. It was proven by improvement of the mean score of the experimental class was higher than the control class in the post-test (10.7 > 9.5).
