Abstrak
TThis research was motivated by the use of Whatsapp as an online learning tool for more than two semesters. Whatsapp is an effective tool in learning speaking for students, especially Whatsapp features that help in the process of learning students’ speaking. However, teacher no longer used Whatsapp. Although, learning is no longer online, whatsapp should be used by teacher to develop students’ speaking motivation outside the classroom. This was a survey research. The population of this research was ninth grade students who have learned English learning especially when speaking using whatsapp application. The population of this study totalled 135 students. The researcher used cluster sampling technique, so that the sample came from class 9.5 which amounted to 26 students. The instrument used in research was questionnaire consisted of 20 items which used a Likert scale. The researcher validated the instrument through three experts. Quantitative descriptive analysis was used to analyze the data. The total percentage of data analysis for intrinsic motivation was 70.38% which was on an agreed scale, indicator of extrinsic motivation 77.45% which was which was on a strongly agreed scale. The average of the two percentages was 73.92% which was classified as an agreed scale. This percentage if interpreted was in the effective category. This can be concluded that the use of whatsapp on learning speaking motivation at ninth grade students was effective in learning English especially in learning speaking motivation of students.
