ABSTRACT Memi Cahya Ningsih,2316010: The Effect of Activating Background Knowledge on Students’ Reading Comprehension in Descriptive Text at the Second Grade of MTSN 6 AGAM The thesis entitles, The Effect of Activating Background Knowledge on Students Reading Comprehension in Descriptive Text at the Second Grade of MTSN 6 AGAM. The purpose of this research were to find the students’ reading comprehension in descriptive text that taught by using activating background knowledge and to find whether significant differences of student’ who activate background knowledge with the student’ who are not activate the background knowledge on reading comprehension in descriptive text. The subject of this research was the second grade of MTSN 6 AGAM, while the object of this research was students’ reading comprehension in descriptive text. The population of this resarch was 278 students, because the population number was big, the resercher took purposive sampling with some consideration. The researcher used two classes on this research ( experimental class and control class). There were two variable of this research X ( Activating background Knowledge) and Y ( Reading comprehension). To collect the data researcher used pre-test and post-test test, to analyze the data the researcher used t-test. The result shows that to is 55,78 compared to level significant 0,05 is 1,70, so the researcher conclude that Ho was rejected and Ha was accepted. There is significant effect of using activating background kowledge on students’ reading comprehension in descriptive text of MTSN 6 AGAM.
