Therefore, the purpose of this research was to find out whether there was a correlation between students’ learning autonomy and and their writing ability in class XII. This research was a correlational study that used quantitative methods with two variables. The sample of this research uses random sampling method from seven classes, each of which has a different number of students. The total population was 211 students, with a sample of 40 students. The instruments used in this study were questionnaires and documentation. For students' learning autonomy, researchers distributed a questionnaire consisting of 113 items designed by Everhard and Leomurphy (2015). Then for students' achievement in writing, the researcher requested data on students' scores in English subjects to the teacher of the subject. The researcher used Correlation Test and Regression Analysis through SPSS 16.0 to analyze the data. The results of this research showed that the calculated sig. r value is 0.000 lower than the alpha value of 0.05, which indicated that there was a significant correlation between students' learning autonomy and their achievement in writing. This means that the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected while the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. The calculated r value is 0.741 which is greater than the r table of 0.312. This means that students' learning autonomy and student writing achievement has a strong correlation because it ranges in the correlation coefficient range between 0.65-1.00. It can be concluded that, there was a significant, positive and strong relationship between students' learning autonomy and students' writing achievement in class XII at SMKN 4 Payakumbuh.
