Abstrak
ABSTRACT Wahyuningsih, 2318035 with title “Developing English Reading Material for The Tenth Grade of Computer and Network Engineering Students at SMK N 4 Payakumbuh”. Thesis, English Education Department, State Islamic University of Sjech M.Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi, 2022. This research was conducted because of several problems that was found in SMK N 4 Payakumbuh, there were, first in learning English the material used by the teacher was not related to the major of vocational high school especially in computer and network engineering, second the textbook used by the students was no provide the material that is appropriate to the students’ major, and the last the material used in the classroom was only taken from the internet randomly by the teacher. This research was Research and Development (R&D) Research. The research subjects in this study were students from the tenth grade of TKJ 2 from SMK N 4 Payakumbuh in the academic year 2021/2022. There were 2 types of questionnaire and one type of test used in this study. The first was the students' needs questionnaire which was given to students to identify what students need in learning English in the classroom. The second was a questionnaire which served to evaluate the results of the reading material that had been developed previously. The third were a pre test and post test which used a pre-experimental research research model, to measure the level of effectiveness of the reading material that had been developed. This study used a model from Sugiyono in which the stages are research, design, production and testing. The results of the students' needs were the basis and guidelines in developing reading material. The first draft was evaluated by 3 validators. And the results were analyzed through quantitative. Six units had been developed in this study. Each unit consisted of an introduction, main lesson, and reinforcement task which consisted of 6 activities in each unit that focus on students' reading comprehension. The results of the product test showed that the reading material that had been made was declared valid, practical, and effective. For the results of the validation test from three validators, the score was 83%, the practicality test from one teacher and 27 students was 92%, and the last test of effectiveness obtained a significance value of 0.00 which is 0.005, then the reading material was categorized as effective.
