ABSTRACT Wat Yurismawati, 2317.065. The Effect of Discussion Strategy to Improve Students’ Speaking Fluency In The XI Class Ashabul Yamin Boarding School, 2022. A thesis, State Islamic Institute of Bukittinggi. The research was done due to several problems found in the field. There were students’ problems in speaking Fluency. The students seemed to worry when they speak in front of the class, because they were not confident enough to deliver their ideas through English in oral communication. They were afraid of making mistakes in grammar, pronunciation, or fluency. In this research, the researcher used discussion strategy to improve students’ speaking fluency. Was there any significant effect of discussion strategy to improve students’ speaking fluency in the XI class Ashabul Yamin Boarding School?, Was there any significant differences of students’ speaking fluency between the students who are using the conventional method?, Was speaking fluency of students who are taught by using discussion strategy better than the students who are taught by using discussion strategy?. This research used quantitative research as the methodology of this research and the kind of this research experimental research. The design of this research was Pre experimental research with one group pretest-posttest design. The subjects in this research were all of the students at grade XI B in Ashabul Yamin Boarding School. In taking the sample, the researcher used the purposive sampling technique, in which XI B class became the sample of the research, which consisted of 16 students. The data were gotten from the students’ speaking tests that were given before and after treatment was given. The result of the research found that three reserach findings. First, there was significant effect of discussion strategy of students speaking fluency, this score of the students’ post-test was higher than the score of the students’ pretest and the mean score of the pretest was 60,67 whereas the mean score of students’ posttest was 65,74. It means that the discussion strategy gave an impact on students’ fluency. Second there was significant differences of students speaking fluency between the students who where using the conventional method. The last, speaking fluency of students who where taught by using discussion strategy was better than the students who where taught by using conventional method. In addition to the test hypothesis, the t-obtained is 6,84 while the t-table on α= 0,05 was 1.753. It means that the t-obtained was higher than the t-table. In other words, the Ha was accepted, which stated that there was a significant effect of using discussion strategy cam improve students’ speaking fluency in the XI class Ashabul Yamin Boarding School. It can be concluded that using Discussion Strategy gave a significant effect on students in learning speaking especially in speaking fluency.
