ABSTRACT Rahma Yana, 2316,132. STUDENT'S PERCEPTION OF USING HUMOR IN ENGLISH TEACHING AT SMAN 2 TILATANG KAMANG. Thesis, Bukittinggi State Islamic Institute, 2021 Humor has several important roles in the world of education, including having the ability to reduce student anxiety, improve student learning abilities and increase self-confidence. but in it’s implementation there were several problems found. First, some students were noisy in the classroom and did not focus on learning. Second, some students gave positive and negative responses to teachers who used humor in the classroom. Third, there are differences in responses between male and female students regarding the use of humor in the classroom. This research was motivated by several problems found in SMAN 2 Tilatang Kamang. Lastly, some students didn't like humor in class. The researcher used a quantitative approach with a descriptive form. The purpose of this study was to find out how students perceive the use of humor in teaching English at SMAN 2 Tilatang Kamang and to determine the differences in perceptions of male and female students regarding the use of humor in teaching English in the classroom. SMAN 2 Tilatang Kamang. The sample in this study were 75 students of class XI SMAN 2 Tilatang Kamang. To coll ect data, the researcher used a closed questionnaire. Based on the findings, research questions were answered. First, "How are students' perceptions of the use of humor in learning English at SMAN 2 Tilatang Kamang?" It was found that students' perceptions of humor in learning English were in the positive category. This conclusion was taken by taking the average score of 4 types of humor in learning English, namely learning Caricature Humor, Short Stories/Anecdotes Humor, Special Humor, and Unplanned Humor. Second, how are the perceptions of male and female students different about the use of humor in teaching English at SMAN 2 Tilatang Kamang? It was found that male and female students have positive perceptions of humor in teaching English. However, female students had slightly better perceptions than male students.
