Abstrak
ABSTRACT Melisa Renosari, 2315038, “Analysis of Discourse Markers Used in Writing at Fifth Semester Students of English Education Section” a thesis, State Islamic Institute Bukittinggi, 2020 This research was conducted because of problems found in the field; more than half of students still do not use discourse markers to connect ideas in writing. The purpose of this study is to find out the kind of discourse marker students used in writing and the problems students had in using discourse markers. This research used quantitative descriptive as research method. The population in this study was 121 students in the fifth semester of the English Language Study Program at IAIN Bukittinggi and used random sampling as a research sampling technique. In addition, data analysis was done by analyzing data, percentage and making conclusions. The study found that the kind of discourse marker commonly used by students was elaborative marker and adversative marker was 62,5%, while the least used was causal inferential marker was 37,5%. Then, the problem of students in using discourse marker is overuse and nonequivalent exchange.
