ABSTRACT Nila Sari BP.2312.052, “The Effect of Using Problem Solving Technique toward Students Grammar Mastery in Simple Present Tense at Second Grade of Mts N 11 Agam in Academic Year 2017/2018”. A Thesis, State Islamic Institute Bukittinggi, 2019. This research was due to several problems found in the field that is; the students still confused with the rules of simple present tense, some students did not pay attention to the teacher explanation the material in the front of the class and the teacher still used conventional technique in teaching Grammar. In teaching Grammar, there are technique that give effect to the students’ Grammar mastery. One of technique is Problem Solving Technique. This research used quasi experimental research by using quantitative approach. The sample was 47 students from class VIII.2 and class VIII.3 Class VIII.2 was used as experimental class in which the treatment was given, while class VIII.3 was used as control class where the researcher only used the conventional technique in teaching Grammar. The researcher used purpose Sampling Technique in chossing the sample. To analyzing the data, the researcher used Liliefors test to test the normality and F-test to test the homogeneity. Then, to test the hypothesis the researcher used t-test and (α) = 0.05. Based on the calculation of pre-test and post-test from experimental class, it was found that the t-obtained (19) was higher than the t-table (2.021) with degree of freedom (df) = 24 + 23 - 2 = 45 and (α) = 0.05. Hence, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted which means that there was significant effect of using problem solving technique to students grammar mastery. Then, the calculation of post-test of both classes is as follows, it was obtained that the t-obtained was (9) which was higher than the t-table (1,679) with degree of freedom 24 + 23 – 2 = 45 and (α) = 0.05. The alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted which means that there is significant difference between using problem solving technique and conventional technique. Then t-obtained both of classes is (9) which was higher than t-table (2,021) with (α) = 0.05. The alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted which means that problem solving technique is better than conventional technique in teaching grammar. It can be concluded that the entire hypotheses are accepted. It is proved that using problem solving technique could help the students at the second grade of MTs N 11 Agam in improving their grammar mastery.
