Abstrak
ABSTRACT Khabib Muafi, 2312.096.The Effect of Using Card Sort Toward Students’ Vocabulary Mastery at Eight Grade of SMPN 7 Bukittinggi in the Academic Year 2017/2018. A Thesis, State Islamic Institute (IAIN) Bukittinggi, 2018. This research was done because most of the students of junior high school, students still encounter problems in mastering English especially vocabulary mastery. Most of the students were difficult to memorize the new word eventhough they have studied English before. Then, the atmosphere of the classroom was not conductive and the students tend to be sleepy and bored in the classroom. Based on these facts, the researcher need to seek the problems and the solution of these. One of them is using card sort in vocabulary mastery. So, the researcher interested to conduct research at SMPN 7 Bukittinggi that aimed to know wheter there was significant effect of using Card Sort towards vocabulary mastery at SMPN 7 Bukittinggi. This research was a experimental research. The total of population was 7 classes. The researcher used Purposive Sampling Technique in choosing the sample with considerations both of the classes had same the teacher, same course, level, and condition. So, there were only one experimental class (VIII.7) and control class (VIII.6). To analyze the data of experimental class and control class, the researcher used the normality by using Lilliefors test and the homogeneity test by using F-test result and to test the hypothesis the researcher used t-test formula and consulted the result into ttable with level of significant α=0.05. The findings show that three hypothesis (Ha) were accepted. The first,the result of the pre-test and the post-test scores of experimental class was found that the tobtained (5.66) more than the ttable (1.6448). So, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted that there was a significant effect of using card sort toward vocabulary mastery. The second, the result of the post-test of experiment class and control class were found that the tobtained (4.36) more than the ttable (1.95995). Thus, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted that there was a significant difference between using card sort activity and who are not taught by using card sort activity. The last, the result of the post-test of experiment class and control class were found that the tobtained (4.36) more than the ttable (1.6448). It was also found that the students’ vocabulary mastery by using card sort was better than the students who are not taught by using card sort activity. It means that by using card sort in teaching English gives significant effect toward students’ vocabulary mastery.
