Abstrak
ABSTRACT Dessy Atika Suri Hutasuhut, 2313.117. An Analysis of Students’ Error in Translating Indonesian News Text into English by Sixth Semester Students of English Education Department at State Islamic Institute of Bukittinggi in Academic Year 2017/2018. A Thesis, State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Bukittinggi, 2017. This research was conducted by the researcher because there were some problems which were faced in translating by the sixth semester students of English Education Department at State Islamic Institute of Bukittinggi in academic year 2017/2018. The problems were students have problem in the equivalence of the word, did not have any vocabularies in translating, and did some errors in grammar and spelling. Due to the problems, the researcher would like to know the most and causes of students’ errors in translating especially in translating Indonesian news text into English. The design of this research was descriptive qualitative. There were twenty eight students as the informant of this resarch and the researcher selected seven students for each class from four different classes. They were selected by using purposive sampling technique. Then, the researcher used documentation and interview to got the data for this research. The researcher found that the students made two types of error while translating Indonesian text into English. Types of error that students made were local errors (omission, addition, and misformation), and global error (misordering). Most of students made local errors because there were seven hundred eight two errors (one hundred ninety five for omission, seventy seven for addition, and five hundred ten for misformation). In addition, the students made eighty seven global or misordering error. Intralingual transfer, context of learning, and communicative strategy were the main causes of local errors while interlingual transfer was the cause of global or misordering error. In conclusion, local errors were dominant errors that appeared in students’ translation because intralingual transfer, context of learning, and communcative strategy were the main causes of these errors.
