A Thesis, State Islamic Institute (IAIN) Bukittinggi, 2017. This research was due to the discovery of the effect of using English for specific purpose toward students’ speaking skill. Research has been done at SMKN 2 Bukittinggi in tourism department. English for vocational purpose is very important for supporting proficiency of students because the use of language especially in speaking was directed to the real situation in the workplace. Researcher found problems in SMKN 2 Bukittinggi such as english teacher just used a general English book which prepared by government. It can not support vocational student’s proficiency, and the result students was monotonous and afraid for speaking. Next, vocational High School still encounter problems in mastering English especially speaking skill. Most of the students are not able to speak English because of their are personality and language factors. Thus, researcher wanted to find the effect of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) toward student’s speaking skill at the first grade of SMKN 2 Bukittinggi in Academic year 2017/2018 This research used experimental research. The researcher used a quasi-experimental design by using the pretest-posttest control group design. The population of this research was the first grade of SMKN 2 Bukittinggi. The sample was X UPW which was treated as experimental class and taught English for specific purpose material used communicative approach and X Hotel 2 was treated as control class and taught by general material used scientific approach. To determine the sample, the researcher used purposive sampling technique. The data was got through pretest and posttest to experimental and control classes. To analyze the data, the researcher used the normality by using Lilliefors test and the homogeneity test by using F test and to test the hypothesis, the researcher used t-test formula and consulted the result into t-table with level of the significance ∝ = 0.025 for the first and second hypothesis and (∝) = 0.05 for the third hypothesis. From the result and accounting the pre-test and post-test scores of the experimental class, it was found that the t-obtained (13.29) was higher than the t-table (1.960) with the degree of freedom (df) = 34+34-2 = 66 and level of significance (∝)= 0.05/2= 0.025. So that, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted which means that there was significant effect of English for specific purpose material on students’ speaking skill. Then, the calculation of post-test both classes: experimental and control classes was obtained the t-obtained (2.25) which was higher than the t-table (1.960) with the degree of freedom (df) =34+34-2 = 66 and level of significance (∝)= 0.05/2= 0.025. So that, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted which means that there is significant difference between English for specific purpose material and using general material. Then, the t-obtained in post-test both classes was obtained t-obtained (5.15) which was higher than t-table (1.645) with degree of freedom (df) = 34+34-2 = 66 and level of significance (∝) = 0.05. So that, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted which means that the students who are taught by using ESP Material is better than the students who are taught by using English for specific purpose material . So, it can be concluded that the entire hypothesis is accepted. It is proved that using English for specific purpose material on students’ speaking skill can help the students in their speaking skill.
