Abstrak
ABSTRACT Siti Rahma Sari, 2312.015. An Analysis of Sentence Problem Found in Students Writing Essay at the Fifth Semester in English Departmet of IAIN Bukittinggi( 2016 / 2017) The research was done the researcher found several problems face by the fifth semester students of English education department of IAIN Bukittinggi in academic year 2016 / 2017 in writing essay. Based on the preliminary research with some students and the writing lecturer, the researcher found the problem. Some of students did not complete to write an essay. Some of students did not write the punctuation correctly. Some of students did not use the conjunction correctly. Based on the problem above, the researcher conducted the research in order to know what the types of sentence problem found in students writing essay and what the percentage found in students writing essay. The design of the research was descriptive quantitative research. The respondents of the research were 24 students who were taken 6 students randomly from each class A, B, C, and D at the fifth semester of English Education Department in IAIN Bukittinggi. The criteria sample is the sample has been learnt to write an essay in Academic writing III. The researcher used documentation to collect the data. In analyzing the data, the researcher uses formula to find out the percentage of the data that has been collected through documentation. The result shows that the students made some problem in writing essay. There are 5 of sentence problem were identified, they are fragment sentence, choppy sentence, run-on sentence, comma splices, and stringy sentence. Based on the formula which was used, the researcher found the percentage of students problem. The total of problem is 162 which classified into 5 types : fragment sentence 77 cases (47,5%), choppy sentence 13 cases (8%), run-on sentence 41 cases (25,3%), comma splices 23 cases (14,2%), and stringy sentence 9 cases (5,6%). In conclusion, more of the students made sentence fragment in writing essay it can be seen in each of percentage sentence problem. Key Word : Writing, Sentence Problem
