Abstrak
ABSTRACT Vira Santika: 2317001, “An Analysis of Teaching Techniques used for Improving Students’ Reading Comprehension in EFL Classroom”, A Thesis, State Islamic University of Sjech M. Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi, 2023. This research was conducted because there were several problems with students' reading comprehension activities in the classroom. Based on the preliminary research, it was found that the students stated that reading English text is a difficult thing to do. Additionally, due to students' lack of vocabulary, it is difficult for them to comprehend texts in English. Despite some of students problems, the teacher succeeded in getting students to exceed the KKM score (65), namely 75, even though it was still at the medium level. However, getting 75 in English subject was a good achievement since they were EFL learner of a vocational school. Thus, this study aimed to find out what teaching techniques used by the teacher to improve students' reading comprehension. This research was conducted at SMK N 1 Tanjung Raya. The design of this research was narrative qualitative research. In order to collect the data, this research used observation, semi-structured interviews, and opened-questionnaire as the instruments. The population of this research was 10 of Mechanical Engineering tenth-grade students of SMK N 1 Tanjung Raya. This research used purposive sampling to get the sample for the observation. Then, this research also used purposive sampling to get the sample for the interview. There was one English teacher who was interviewed in this research. The result showed that teaching techniques used for improving students reading comprehension in EFL classroom at SMK N 1 Tanjung raya was pre-reading which included pre-viewing, discussing type, brainstorming and also reviewing familiar stories techniques. Then, there was while-reading which included noting grammatical functions of unknown words, analyzing reference word, using dictionary, rereading for detail, reading aloud, and summarizing. Lastly, there was post reading which included checking students reading comprehension, discussing in group, reviewing and also follow-up activity. Several techniques applied by the teacher in improving students' reading comprehension had been proven effective for vocational school at SMK N 1 Tanjung Raya.
