ABSTRACT Monica Aprilia (2320094): “The Effect of Using KWL Strategy Toward Students Reading Comprehension on Descriptive Text at the Eight Grade Students of UPTD SMPN 5 Kec.Pangkalan Koto Baru”. Thesis, State Islamic University Sjech M. Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi, 2024. This research was conducted based on the problems found by the researcher in the English learning process related to reading comprehension. The problems found included that some students had difficulties in finding the main idea in the text. Secondly, the students did not understand the contents of the text because they lacked vocabulary knowledge. Third, students' reading comprehension scores were still below the minimum criteria (KKM). Furthermore, the teachers’ teaching way were also monotonous, and the strategies used were less attractive. The purpose of this research was to examine the effect of using KWL Strategy Toward Students Reading Comprehension on Descriptive Text at the Eight Grade Students of UPTD SMPN 5 Kec.Pangkalan Koto Baru. This research used experimental research with true experimental design, specifically a pretest-posttest design in both experimental and control classes. The population of this research included all eighth-grade students of UPTD SMPN 5 Kec.Pangkalan Koto Baru totalling 64 students. The researcher used simple random sampling to determine the research sample. The samples for this research were class VIII.1 as the experimental class and class VIII.2 as the control class. To collect data, the researcher used reading comprehension test for both the pre-test and post-test. The data were analyzed using the T-test formula. The results showed that the mean score of students in the experimental class was higher than their mean pre-test score. This indicated that the KWL strategy had an effect on students' reading comprehension. In addition, the independent sample t-test showed that the Sig (2-tailed) value was 0.000 0.05, meaning the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted, indicating a significant effect of using KWL strategy on students' reading comprehension. Furthermore, the paired sample t-test analysis showed that the Sig. (2-tailed) was 0.000 0.05. This indicated that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and there was a significant difference between the reading comprehension students who were taught by using KWL strategy and students who were not taught by using KWL strategy . In conclusion, the use of KWL strategy had an effect to improve students' reading comprehension.
