THE CORRELATION BETWEEN STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY MASTERY AND THEIR LISTENING ABILITY AT THE SECOND SEMESTER OF ENGLISH STUDENTS IN UIN BUKITINGGI ACADEMIC YEAR 2022/2023
Elni Asrida: 2319153, “The Correlation between Students’ Vocabulary Mastery and Students’ Listening Ability at The Second Semester of English Students in UIN Bukitinggi Academic Year 2022/2023, A Thesis, State Islamic University of Sjech M. Djamil Djambek Bukittinggi, 2023. The background of this research was several problems where some students had low vocabulary mastery but low listening ability, and some students had high vocabulary mastery but high listening ability on English. This research aimed to find out whether there is correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and students’ listening ability at the second semester of English students’ in UIN Bukitinggi academic year 2022/2023. The design of this research was correlation design. The population of this research was all of second semester of English students in UIN Bukitinggi which consisted of 105 students. This research used cluster sampling because the population was more than a hundred. To collect data, this research used test to measure students' vocabulary mastery, and test to measure students’ listening ability. The data in this research was analyzed using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient (r) with SPSS 25 windows. The finding of the research showed that the Pearson Product Moment Correlation (r) was 0,892. It means, there was a positive correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and their listening ability. The result of the magnitude between the two variables was high correlation because it lies between the interpretations of 0.70-0.90. Based on hypothesis testing, the rxy was 0.892 whereas r - table on α = 0.05 was 0.344. It means that rxy score is bigger than r - table score. Hence, Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected. Thus, there was a positive correlation between students’ vocabulary mastery and their listening ability of second semester English students in UIN Bukitinggia academic year 2022/2023.
