ABSTRACT Ade Afriani, 2314.032. The Effect of THIEVES Strategy Towards Students’ Reading Comprehension in Recount Text at the Eight Grade of SMPN 2 Kamang Magek. A Thesis, State Islamic Institute (IAIN) Bukittinggi, 2020. This research was done because most of the students of Junior High School students still encounter problems in mastering English especialy reading comprehension.. The students read the texts but they could not get the information’s from the text well. Consequently, the students did not comprehend the text. As a result, only a few students were able to undestand the text. This research used experimental research. The researcher used a quasi experimental design by using the pre-test and post-test control group design. The population of this research was the eight grade students at SMPN 2 Kamang Magek. The sample was VIII.1 which was treated as experimental class and taught by using THIEVES strategy and VIII.2 was treated as control class and taught by using conventional strategy. To determine the sample, the researcher used total sampling technique, because of the population in this research less than hundred students. From the result and accounting the pre-test and post-test scores of the experiment class, it was found that the t-obtained (3.75) was higher than the t-table (1.6787) with degree of freedom (df) = 46 and (α) = 0,05. So, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted which means that there was significant effect of THIEVES strategy to the students reading comprehension on recount text. Then, the calculation of post-test both classes : was experimental class and control class, it was obtained that the t-obtained was (2.24) which was higher than the t-table (2.0129). The data was got through pretest and posttest to experimental and control groups. To analyze the data, the researcher used the normality by using Lilliefors test and the homogeneity test by using F test and to test the Hypothesis the researcher used t-test formula and consulted the result into t- table with level of significance α = 0,05. With degree of freedom 24 + 24 – 1 = 46 and (α)= 0.025 So, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted which means that there is significant difference between using THIEVES strategy and conventional strategy. Then t-obtained both of classes in third hypothesis is (2.24) which was higher than t-table (1.6787) with (α)= 0,05. So, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted which means that THIEVES strategy is better than conventional strategy in teaching reading comprehension on recount text. So, it can be concluded that the entire hypothesis is accepted. It is proved that using THIEVES strategy as a reading strategy can help the students in improving their reading comprehensions especially recount text.
